For an exhibition at the Pace Gallery in Chelsea, the abstract painter Thomas Nozkowski made drawings of his works — the show features 19 pairings. Below, Ted Loos, arts writer for The Times, discusses the process with the artist.
CHANGING SCALES
At the 11th hour, after a year and a half of work, Mr. Nozkowski changed the size of some of the colored squares within the large, bulbous form in his painting “Untitled (8-128),” left.
When it came to the cool-down exercise he decided to go further. “I hadn’t planned to have this scale change,” he said, but he liked the effect. “So when I did the drawing, I thought, ‘Let’s hit it as hard as we can.’”
