Sometime in the early 1920s, a Greenwich Village bookseller named Frank Shay began inviting notable visitors to autograph a narrow door in his shop at 4 Christopher Street. The door was removed when the bookshop closed in 1925, and fell into obscurity, along with many of the people who signed it. "The Greenwich Village Bookshop Door: A Portal to Bohemia, 1920-1925," a new exhibit at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas, Austin, has identified some 190 people behind the signatures in an effort to reconstruct the lost cultural world of the Village.
