The following images appear in Benjamin Cawthra’s “Blue Notes in Black and White: Photography and Jazz” (University of Chicago Press), an essayistic history of jazz photos that were taken mostly between the late 1930s and the mid-1960s. In his review, Ben Ratliff says the book is “an inquiry into how the most reproduced images in jazz helped change general opinion about the music.”
At left, Louis Armstrong in June 1960.
