Illustrations by Eugen Osswald for Ball der Tiere (The Animals' Ball, Germany, 1917)
I featured a couple images from this book back in March 2009. Since that time the International Children's Digital Library has uploaded the full book (in German) in higher resolution. A quick search revealed that Full Table covered this book years ago. They're also working on additional archiving with Osswald's great nephew.
I haven't found a full listing of the many books illustrated by Eugen Osswald (1879–1960), or much biographical info beyond the fact that he followed a circus to perfect his animal paintings. (I also don't know the story behind it, but the Center for Jewish History houses a book Osswald illustrated in 1933 featuring happy children frolicking amongst swastikas.) I'll keep watching Full Table's page and try to dig further myself. Seeing a thumbnail of Osswald's version of Reynard the Fox makes me want to find that first.

Jan Willemsen uploaded a great flickr set of Osswald illustrations from Machet auf das Tor (Arise at the Gate, 1920). Here are a handful of them:

In February 2011 an auction house sold a set of eight Osswald illustrations for The Little Valiant Night (1925). I love this style and hope to somehow see the other five illustrations.
